The Solar Project Is Generating Power. Has the Insurance Moved With It?

A solar project does not move neatly from construction to normal operation in one moment. Arrays may be energised in stages, testing can continue and punch-list work may overlap with commercial generation.

That makes the insurance handover worth planning early. Construction and operational policies may define completion and testing differently.

Agree the transition milestones

Map mechanical completion, energisation, testing, provisional acceptance and final handover. Confirm which party carries risk and which policy is expected to respond at each point, including any defects period.

Use operational data from day one

Once generation starts, monitoring and maintenance records become part of the risk story. Establish alert ownership and escalation rather than letting early warnings sit in a dashboard.

  • Update replacement values and revenue assumptions.
  • Check flood, storm, fire and theft protections on site.
  • Review spare-part and transformer lead times.
  • Document warranties and maintenance responsibilities.

The practical takeaway

Treat handover as a joint meeting between project, operations, finance and insurance teams. Power generation should not begin with an unanswered coverage gap.

Coverage, exclusions, limits and claim requirements vary by insurer and policy. Read the customer information sheet and policy wording before you buy or renew.
