Thinking of Porting Your Health Policy? Start Before Renewal Week
Share India Editorial Team
A lower premium or a better hospital network can make a new health policy attractive. Porting may allow continuity benefits to move with you, subject to the applicable rules and the new insurer’s underwriting. It is not an automatic swap at the renewal counter.
Starting early gives you time to compare the new wording and answer medical questions properly without risking a break in cover.
Compare what changes, not only what continues
Place the current and proposed customer information sheets side by side. Check room eligibility, co-payments, exclusions, restoration, network hospitals and claim service as carefully as the sum insured.
- Collect policy schedules and claim history from prior years.
- List diagnoses, medicines, investigations and pending treatment.
- Confirm how continuity credit will be recorded.
- Keep the existing policy active until the new arrangement is confirmed.
Treat disclosure as a fresh responsibility
Do not assume the new insurer can infer every medical detail from old claims. Answer the proposal questions completely and retain a copy of the submitted form and supporting records.
One last thought
Port because the new policy fits better, not because one quote is cheaper. The wording you move into matters for years after the renewal date.
Coverage, exclusions, limits and claim requirements vary by insurer and policy. Read the customer information sheet and policy wording before you buy or renew.
