Your EV Policy and Your Home Charger Solve Different Problems

Buying an electric vehicle adds equipment that a conventional car owner may never have considered. The portable cable travels with the vehicle, while a wall charger becomes part of the home or workplace installation.

Before relying on one policy name, ask where each item is insured and what happens if it is damaged, stolen or causes damage elsewhere.

List the equipment and ownership

Record the vehicle, traction battery, portable charger, wall unit, wiring upgrades and any equipment supplied under lease or subscription. Keep invoices and installation certificates.

Check the installation as carefully as the insurance

Use an authorised installer, follow electrical load and earthing requirements, and keep the area protected from water and impact. For society or workplace parking, document permissions and maintenance responsibility.

  • Ask how battery damage and depreciation are treated.
  • Confirm cover for charging accessories.
  • Review roadside assistance for an exhausted battery.
  • Tell the home or property insurer about material installation changes.

What to remember

The useful question is not simply whether the EV is insured. It is whether every part of the charging setup has a clear owner, maintenance plan and coverage answer.

Coverage, exclusions, limits and claim requirements vary by insurer and policy. Read the customer information sheet and policy wording before you buy or renew.
